Abstract: In recent years, learning and knowing have emerged as key issues in understanding work organizations. Identifying ways in which learning can be supported in the workplace has been a long standing concern for organization studies and education. What is particularly interesting is that the debate about organization and workplace learning has moved, from a focus on formal and informal ways of supporting learning, to ways in which learning can become a part of working life. With contributions from a diverse range of international authorities in the areas of management and education as well as organizational psychology and sociology, this book presents new ways of thinking about learning at work, and a new understanding of its role and purpose. The book explores ways in which better sustainability and renewal of organizational resources can be achieved while allowing learning to be the driving force responsible for engaging employees with the challenges of working life. The book suggests that by focusing on learning as a way of life, the needs of production can be reconciled with the need for employees to have satisfying engagement with their work. By addressing issues of learning and working as key elements in life, this book provides the much-needed reflective stance in the fields of organizational learning and workplace learning. Moreover, it paves the way for the repositioning of learning, working and living in the context of organizational complexity.
